Open collector circuit

Open collector circuit

An open collector is a common type of output found on many integrated circuits (IC), which behaves like a switch that is either connected to ground or disconnected.

What is an open drain collector?

An open-drain or open-collector output pin is driven by a single transistor, which pulls the pin to only one voltage (generally, to ground).

Why is it called open collector?

The term “open collector” refers to a current sink on a transistor output. If an NPN transistor is left unconnected, or open but connected to an external pin, it's an open collector.

What is an open collector input and why is it used on sensors?

The open-collector output of a power supply is a method of control circuitry used to output the state (status) and other information of the power supply. The output of a power supply is controlled by an open collector to turn it on and off externally.

What is open collector encoder?

An open-collector output (Figure 2) is the most common among rotary encoders. This means that the collector pin on the transistor is left open, or disconnected, when the input signal is high. When the output is required to be low, it is driven to ground.

Is open collector a dry contact?

A "dry contact input" generally expects that its two contacts will be shorted to each other to activate it -- and NOT shorted to anything else. An "open collector output" is one that is open-circuit when inactive, and shorted to ground when active.

What is open collector comparator?

Open-collector comparators are built with bipolar transistors, while open-drain comparators are built with MOS FETs. The comparator on the left has an open collector output, with an output stage consisting of a single NPN bipolar transistor.

What is the difference between open and closed drains?

There are both closed and open drains in different areas. Closed drain forms a complex network underground. The primary refuse from individual areas is collected and transported to the main network, which finally goes to a treatment plant. An open drain is mostly used to collect wastewater that is not sewage.

What is open collector output in VFD?

The Open-Collector Output is a transistor circuit configuration used in a wide variety of electronic designs includ- ing many integrated circuits (ICs). Three parts make up a transistor: the emitter, the base and the collector.

How open collector or open drain is useful in IIC?

Open drain allows there to be multiple masters on the same bus. If two masters try to transmit at the same time with push-pull drivers, they can damage each other, and even if they don't it's hard to tell which master will win.

Why I2C lines are open drain?

I2C is multi-master and multi-slave protocol. If the lines are not open drain then there may chance that one slave pulling the device low and other slave is trying to pull the same line high. This situation is called as the bus contention.

What is open collector TTL NAND gate?

3.1 Open Collector output: In the open collector TTL gate, the output stage does not have the active pull-up transistor i.e. Q3 and the output is taken at the collector of transistor Q4. In order to generate required HIGH and LOW states, an external pull-up resistor is connected to +Vcc from the collector of Q4.

Why does an open collector need a pull-up resistor?

All open drain outputs require the use of an external pull-up or pull-down resistor to keep the digital output in a defined logic state.

Are Arduino outputs open collector?

Just like sourcing current is an output. There is no open drain or open collector configuration in an arduino. If you want one you have to use an external transistor or FET.

What does a collector do in a transistor?

Collector – The section which collects the major portion of the majority charge carrier supplied by the emitter is called a collector. The collector-base junction is always in reverse bias. Its main function is to remove the majority charges from its junction with the base.

What is the difference between PNP and NPN sensors?

As they are normally referred, PNP and NPN sensors are both supplied with positive and negative power leads, then produce a signal to indicate an “on” state. PNP sensors produce a positive output to your industrial controls input, while NPN sensors produce a negative signal during an “on” state.

What is the difference between line driver and open collector?

Unlike the open collector outputs, line driver chips actively force the output high or low, therefore being able to both sink and source current from the load. The main advantage of the line driver is its ability to push higher current through the cable, enabling longer cable runs.

What is the difference between TTL and HTL?

TTL (transistor-transistor-logic): A signal above 2 V is interpreted as logic 1 and a signal less than 0.8 V is interpreted as logic 0. The output voltage ranges between 0-5 V. HTL (high-threshold-logic): A signal above 3 V is a logic 1 and a signal less than 1 V is a logic 0.

Is TTL a push pull?

Push–pull outputs are present in TTL and CMOS digital logic circuits and in some types of amplifiers, and are usually realized by a complementary pair of transistors, one dissipating or sinking current from the load to ground or a negative power supply, and the other supplying or sourcing current to the load from a

What is push pull vs open drain?

While a push-pull sensor has two MOSFETs that alternately conduct to provide high or low output signals, an open drain sensor has only one MOSFET. When a magnetic field turns the open-drain sensor on, the MOSFET conducts, allowing current to sink through the pull-up resistor to ground.
